Biventricular Pacemaker

This is the latest addition to the types of pacemakers available. It has three leads or electrodes:
1. Right Atrial
2. Right Ventricular
3. Left Ventricular

Advantage of Bi-ventricular pacing

Allows correct timing of right and left ventricular contraction where there is delayed conduction from the right ventricle to the left ventricle. Patients who would benefit are patients in heart failure and patients with bundle branch block.

Method of insertion

The method of insertion is the same as for other types of pacemakers. The patient has a five centimeter incision in the left pectoral region and access is gained via the left subclavian vein. Lead placement is performed using x-ray video images.
