The face of cardiac surgery is changing for a number of reasons:

• Aging population, Australians have one of the highest life expectancies
• Stenting and balloon angioplasty
• Improved medical therapy

At Allamanda Hospital less than half of our patients are routine cases.  The remainder will have one or more of the following risk factors:

• Age greater than 80
• Preoperative impairment in left ventricular contractility
• High risk conditions such as endocarditis, redo-operation
• Unstable preoperative state
• Previous percutaneous intervention
