Discomfort after open-heart surgery

Patients often are apprehensive about the amount of discomfort or pain they will experience after heart surgery.

The majority of patients only require Panadol for pain relief by the time they are discharged from hospital about 5 -7 days after their operation.

After four weeks, most patients only require pain killers at night to help them sleep.

Most patients complain of “soreness” rather than severe pain.

In unusual circumstances patients experience severe pain requiring stronger analgesia to control, but this is rare.

Some patients don’t experience any discomfort at all.
